Shenzhen Maternity and Child Healthcare Hospital (SZMCHH), founded in 1979, later combined with Shenzhen Women and Children’s Hospital in 2002, is now Women and Children's Medical Center of Southern Medical University, and one of the well-known Grade-III Class-A maternal and child hospitals in China and, with healthcare, disease prevention, medical care, teaching, and research expertise.
The hospital has two campuses, the Hongli campus and the Fuqiang campus. In total, the floor space is 35,000 square meters and construction area is 140,000 square meters. It has 1046 authorized beds. The annual emergency and outpatient visits are more than 1.95 million, the annual inpatient visits are over 60,300 and the annual delivery number is over 16,300. The construction and hosting of the Shenzhen Third Children's Hospital is underway, with a planned capacity of 500 beds. Once operational, a new development pattern of “Three Centers” will be established, which bases in Shenzhen and radiates throughout the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
As of December 2023, the hospital has 2333 staffs, among which 2035 are medical personnel, accounting for 87.23% of the total. 186 staffs are senior professionals, 306 are associate senior professionals, 106 with a doctor degree, 600 with a master degree, 5 are doctoral supervisors, and 60 are master supervisors. It has 4 Local Leading Talents, 7 Peacock Plan Category C talents, 2 Clinical Practical Talents, 5 Reserve Talents, and 9 Specially Appointed Positions.
The hospital has a comprehensive range of specialized departments, including Obstetrics, Gynecology, Neonatology, Pediatrics, Pediatric Surgery, Reproductive Medicine Center, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Breast Medicine, Oral Disease Prevention and Treatment Center, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Emergency, Anesthesiology, Medical Genetics Center, Prenatal Diagnosis Center, Ultrasound, Laboratory, Pathology, Radiology, Pharmacy, Women's Health, Children's Health, Neonatal Disease Screening Center, and more than 30 other clinical departments. It is also officially qualified to operate third-generation IVF technology (Preimplantation Genetic Testing, PGT).
A well-established maternal and child health care system. With significant government investment, a three-tiered maternal and child health care network has been established, consisting of municipal and district maternity and child health hospitals, general hospitals, and community health centers. As a result, Shenzhen’s core maternal and child health indicators, including maternal mortality rate, infant mortality rate, and mortality rate for children under 5, are maintained at the level of developed countries, with the health status of women and children consistently ranking among the top in the nation.

The hospital has 1 National Clinical Key Specialty: Neonatology; 2 National Health Care Specialties: Neonatal Health Care and Pregnancy and Childbirth Health Care; 1 National Maternal and Child Health Traditional Chinese Medicine Specialty; 1 Guangdong Province High-Level Clinical Key Specialty: Neonatology; 2 Guangdong Province Clinical Key Specialties: Obstetrics and Pediatrics; 2 Guangdong Province Health Care Specialties: Neonatal Health Care and Menopause Health Care; 1 Guangdong Province Traditional Chinese Medicine Key Specialty: Traditional Chinese Medicine Gynecology; 4 Shenzhen City Medical Key Specialties: Obstetrics, Neonatology, Reproductive Medicine and Maternal and Child Health and Child Health Care; 1 Shenzhen City Traditional Chinese Medicine Specialty: Traditional Chinese Medicine Gynecology; 2 Shenzhen City Key Laboratories: Shenzhen Maternal and Child Health and Maternal Health Key Laboratory and Shenzhen Birth Defect Prevention and Control Key Laboratory. It is one of the first batch of the following Medical & Healthcare and Research & Education Platforms: National Prenatal Ultrasound Training Base, National Neonatal Perinatal Medicine Specialty Physician Training Base, National Cervical Cancer Early Diagnosis And Treatment Demonstration Base, National Child Early Development Demonstration Base, National Maternal And Child Health Traditional Chinese Medicine Characteristic Construction Unit, National Drug/Medical Device Clinical Trial Institution, National Maternal and Child Health and Reproductive Disease Clinical Research Center Shenzhen Subcenter, Shenzhen Maternal and Child Health and Reproductive Disease Clinical Research Center, and Shenzhen Obstetrics and Gynecology Medical Center.
Significantly improved scientific research capabilities. There has been a historic breakthrough in the establishment of major scientific research projects such as the National Key R&D Program and the Key Projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. In 2023, the number of National Natural Science Foundation projects, SCI papers, and impact factors all reached new highs, with a total research funding of over 62 million in the past five years. Increased investment in scientific research and the improvement of research incentive mechanisms have led to the establishment of internal research fund projects and cultivation of outstanding scientific talents. In recent years, the hospital has won the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, Song Qingling Pediatric Medicine Award, National Health Commission's Science and Technology Award for Hospital Development, 4 Guangdong Province Science and Technology Progress Awards, and 8 Shenzhen Municipal Science and Technology Progress Awards. The "Three Famous Projects” have facilitated the development of disciplines, with 7 "Three Famous Projects” teams currently in place. Under the guidance of the introduced teams, the construction and comprehensive strength of the disciplines have significantly improved. It is now a national medicine/medical device clinical trial institution, with more than 30 specialty groups with maternal and child health specialties registered, and the number of projects undertaken is increasing year by year.
In recent years, it has achieved excellent results in various levels of comprehensive performance assessments and evaluations. In the first national performance assessment of maternal and child health institutions conducted by the National Health Commission in 2020, it ranked fifth in the country. In the performance assessment of the third-level maternal and child health institutions in Guangdong Province, it ranked first in the province. It was honored as an advanced collective in the Guangdong Province medical system in 2023.
The hospital's Party Committee places a high emphasis on Party-building work, adhering to the leading role in setting directions, managing overall situations, making decisions, promoting reforms, and ensuring implementation. It fully leverages the role of mass organizations, establishing the first "Holiday Childcare Class for Staff's Children" and the first "Youth Comprehensive Quality Training Class" in the health system, and regularly holds cultural performances, singing contests, and "Youth Forums". The hospital's labor union has set up multiple interest groups, striving to create a cultural brand that is well-received by both staff and patients, contributing to the soul and spirit of the hospital's construction and development.
