May 20, 2022, marked the 18th International Clinical Trials Day. On May 20, 1747, James Lind, a Scottish naval surgeon, conducted the famous scurvy clinical trial that pioneered modern clinical research. Over the past two centuries, clinical trials have evolved continuously, driving rapid advancements in medical science. To mark the occasion, principal investigators (PIs) and party leaders across several Good Clinical Practice (GCP) specialty groups at Shenzhen Maternity and Child Healthcare Hospital actively responded to the call of the National Medical Products Administration. The hospital launched campaigns to raise public awareness about clinical trials, protect subject rights, and advance domestic research and development of drugs and medical devices.

Led by the Healthcare Party General Branch, related branches across the Fuqiang Campus, and the Third Administrative Party Branch, the hospital’s GCP Office and specialty groups jointly organized an interactive educational event at the Fuqiang Campus. Featuring prize quizzes, expert Q&A sessions, and video screenings, the event was warmly received by the public.

Leveraging this public education event, the hospital also promoted several ongoing clinical trials to visiting patients. These included two studies on Fuke Qianjin Capsules combined with antibiotics for pelvic inflammatory disease, led by Dr. Ning Yan, head of the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine; a trial for Wangshi Baochi Pills, conducted by Dr. Zeng Yongmei's pediatric team; and a clinical trial for Zoladex (goserelin), handled by Dr. Jin Ping's gynecology team.
These studies target specific patient populations: women with damp-heat stasis combined with qi deficiency, children with functional dyspepsia syndrome, and premenopausal uterine fibroid patients post-surgery. Although recruitment remains challenging due to strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, researchers continue to screen patients systematically in strict compliance with trial protocols to ensure participant safety and well-being.
Trial participants play a crucial role in advancing new drugs and medical devices, ultimately contributing to the progress of global healthcare. Through this International Clinical Trials Day event, the hospital aims to increase public awareness and acceptance of clinical trials, encouraging broader participation to drive clinical research forward and improve medical care standards.
