On Oct. 30, 2025, the Nursing Department of Shenzhen Maternity and Child Healthcare Hospital hosted a dynamic team-building event at its Fuqiang Campus for its newest cohort of nurses. Themed "Gathering 'New' Strength, Setting Sail for Nursing Dreams," the initiative aimed to comprehensively enhance the nurses' overall professional competencies, critical thinking, teamwork, and communication skills.
Marking an innovative shift in the hospital's training model, the event served as a vital extension of the standard onboarding program. By moving away from traditional classroom lectures toward experiential and immersive learning, the initiative allowed the 56 participating nurses to deepen their professional ethos and team spirit through hands-on collaboration, injecting warmth and strength into their upcoming clinical careers.

In her opening address, Zhu Shening, Director of the Nursing Department, emphasized the event's core purpose. She encouraged the new nurses to uphold the hospital's cultural values of "Unity, Diligence, Integrity, and Progress," urging them to work hand-in-hand and shine in their future roles. She expressed her hope that this engaging and meaningful day would mark the perfect start to a new chapter in their professional lives.
The comprehensive program featured five interactive segments: ice-breaking activities, a tangram puzzle challenge, an innovative "A4 Paper" challenge, a debate competition, and a tug-of-war. The 56 nurses were randomly divided into eight teams. In a rapid five-minute ice-breaking session, teams conceptualized their names, slogans, and signature poses, showcasing vibrant energy and creativity. The subsequent puzzle and physical challenges further tested and highlighted their innovative thinking and seamless team coordination. The first half of the event was carefully evaluated by a distinguished panel of nursing leaders, including Director Zhu Shening, Deputy Director Fang Yingling, and Head Nurses Wang Baojun, Xiao Xiao, Liao Yili, Cheng Juan, and Yu Xiajuan.
The climax of the event was a highly engaging and relevant debate centered on the theme: "Nursing Staff Shortages vs. the Legitimate Rights of Nurses." Guest expert Mr. Peng Jie presided over the debate, while the judging panel comprised senior hospital executives and department heads, including Cui Rui (Head of Medical Affairs), Zhang Jianming (Director of the Party Committee Office), Wu Qiaoxuan (Director of the Hospital Office), Fan Jingjie (Head of Preventive Healthcare), Dai Yu (Deputy Director of the Medical Consortium Office), alongside Nursing Directors Zhu Shening and Fang Yingling.
The debate saw passionate arguments from both sides. The affirmative team emphasized that ensuring patient safety and smooth institutional operation remains the primary duty of nurses, highlighting the core values of dedication and sacrifice. Conversely, the negative team championed a "people-oriented" approach, arguing that safeguarding nurses' legitimate rights is the fundamental, long-term mechanism for maintaining workforce stability. Both sides delivered articulate and well-researched arguments, drawing continuous applause. The judges unanimously agreed that the topic was profoundly relevant to modern healthcare realities. Ultimately, the negative team secured the victory with their highly persuasive rationale and commanding stage presence.
Following the intense debate, a heartwarming "Easter egg" segment added a touch of ceremony to the day. The new nurses inscribed their professional aspirations and personal commitments onto specially designed postcards. These postcards were collected and sealed by the Nursing Department to serve as a "Time Capsule," which the cohort will open together in three years.
The event concluded with a high-energy tug-of-war competition that pushed team cohesion to its peak, accompanied by enthusiastic cheers from the crowd. To cap off the day, the organizers awarded mystery "blind boxes" to the game winners and presented certificates to the best debaters. A commemorative group photo beautifully captured these moments of camaraderie.
Overall, the team-building event successfully bridged the gap between the new colleagues, fostering mutual growth through a vibrant exchange of ideas. In her closing remarks, Director Zhu summarized the success of the event using four keywords: "Gratitude, Excellence, Congratulations, and Expectation." She thanked the new nurses for their enthusiastic participation and the staff for their hard work; praised the excellence of the day's activities; congratulated the teams on their collaborative breakthroughs; and expressed high expectations for their reunion in three years to witness their professional growth.
Equipped with a renewed sense of purpose—with light in their eyes, love in their hearts, and strength in their steps—the 2025 nursing cohort is now ready to set sail for their dreams, moving forward hand-in-hand to shine brilliantly in their future healthcare careers.
